X-Games: Sure they don’t come around every year but when they do, don’t you want to be ready? The crme de la crme of skateboarding championships is coming up soon and you’ve got to have the right ESPN channels to catch it all.
The Urban Games: It’s the UK’s largest street sports competition and you can catch other fan favorites like BMX live, too. This one’s barely televised in the states so keep an eye on your local listings.
The King of Street: Also held in the UK, this competition showcases some of the younger standouts in the sport and there’s even a girls’ league, too. It’s hard to find but it’s a winner when you doand you don’t even have to buy a plane ticket to England!

Skateboarding requires patience and those who mastered skateboarding knows that it takes time and effort in order to master all the moves that we see celebrities do on television shows such as X-Games. Most people beginning to learn skateboarding do not learn the basic first before they try out the fancy moves. Truth is, you must learn the basics of skateboarding first before you do all those fancy moves that require a lot of footwork and mobility in the legs. One phrase to sum it all up for beginners that want to learn to skateboard, keep it simple on the skateboard. You want to start off slow and with great effort with the easy moves first before you get into more complicated moves. By mastering the easy moves first you can build a strong foundation for mastering the harder moves that you see on television Skateboarding takes great time and effort but hard work always pays off in the end. Skateboarding is a ideal sport for young teens because it teaches them strong discipline and hard work ethics. Keeping it simple on the skateboard will teach young people a life long lesson that they could use later in their life.

If you have ever been to a skateboarding contest or at a park where skateboarders come together to share in their hobby, then you know how cool their easy tricks for skateboarding are. If you want to know how they do some of their awesome tricks all you have to do is have a will to do it and beleive that you can do it. The rest is as simple as using technique and your body. For example, a flat ground shove is simply taking your back foot and scooping around. An Ollive shove is trick that does not involve any popping. You just ride on the front of your skateboard and do similar moves as you would for the flat ground shove. For a half cab turn, you basically do a fakie backwards then turn your skateboard about 180 degrees around without popping and ride forward again. A fakie flip is a little more complex but its easy if you are comfortable with popping and flipping. You want to make sure you have good balance and posture for this trick. Almost any skateboarding move can be easily found online. There are tones of videos that walk you through step by step so you can be a cool skateboarder too.

A new hobby can be hard to find if you have no particular interest in mind or goals that you hope to achieve through your hobby. But when it comes to exactly how to spend your time, skateboarding has all of the bases covered. Skateboarding is certain to get you active and into the outdoors. Once a person has a decent amount of ability on a skateboard they are instantly mobile! These people want to take off and explore parts of their town that would not normally be accessible by foot or in a car. For those that are already of the outdoor type, off-road boarding for thrill seekers becomes a passion. Another advantage of entering the world of skateboarding is that it almost always leads to exploring other interests.

As you get to know others that have been skateboarding for an extended period of time, you will realize that skateboarding has the potential to be much more than a hobby. It is a lifestyle, a sign of your attitude and your drive. While it may be difficult to master at first and many of even the most basic tricks take lots and lots of practice or even injuries to master, the rewards are great. Skateboarders have their own lines of clothing and tend to gravitate towards a particular kind of music.

Entire subcultures have been built around the sport. The popularity of skateboarding is evident through the growing crowds that attend competitions such as the annual “X Games.” Skateboarding can be developed into a hobby that not only encourages you to be in better physical health and explore the outdoors, it also encourages building relationships with others who are into the sport. Parents who are concerned with finding activities whose superstars are good role models can also count on skateboarding. Games and public statements by Tony Hawk and other names synonymous with the sport offer new skateboarders nothing but positive messages and encouragement.

It is not an easy task to list off the top skaters in the world, everyone has their own opinion as to who the best is. I think that we can all agree that Tony Hawk is, if not number one, he has absolutely got to be number two. Without Tony Hawk where would skateboarding be today. As one of the original innovators of skateboarding Mr. Hawk has given us the 900, and if I’m not mistaken, to date is the only man to accomplish this truly unbelievable feat of athleticism.
On to Rodney Mullen, this man brings his own unique style to skateboarding. Rodney Mullen’s style can be referred to as relaxed, he makes every trick that he executes seem effortless and easy, but make no mistake Rodney Mullen has put in the time and effort to become the legend that he is today. Beginning to compete in 1977, Rodney took on his first sponsor in 1980 at the young age of 14.
Being a competitive skateboarder since 1989, Danny Way has definitely made his mark on the sport and takes my number three spot. Currently holding the world record 28 foot bomb drop off of the Hard Rock Hotel guitar Danny is a three time XG big air gold medalist. Another one of DW’s amazing feats, in April of 2006, he jumped over the Great Wall of China.
Rounding out my guide to the best skaters would have to be Colin Mckay and Ryan Sheckler and those are the facts. Just like anything else everyone’s got their own opinions.

It’s grind time! Grinding is one of the more basic skateboarding tricks around, but when done correctly and well can be a great trick for others to watch and provides you with material to impress your friends or the casual observing stranger. There are several different types of grinding tricks. Let’s start with the 50/50 grind. This has traditionally been a popular trick in freestyle skateboarding. The grind involves grinding both “trucks” along your surface of choice. The grind is still performed by professional skaters, including Rodney Mullen. The 5-0 grind is a kind of natural progression of the 50/50 grind. You want to grind on two trucks? Fine, I’ll grind on one. As you may have picked up, the 5-0 involves grinding on one of your trucks, specifically the back truck, while the other remains suspended in the air. It is a bit more impressive looking than the 50/50. If you want to take the progression a little further than you meet the “nosegrind”. You guessed it, this grind involves hopping onto your chosen edge on the front truck and grinding your way forward. This trick is not easy to master, but once you do prepare for impressed bystanders. What’s 1 more click? Your boss isn’t watching… GRIND FOR LIFE and JACK’S BOARDHOUSE PRESENT A MATT KLINE BENEFIT

If you have just begun to take up skateboarding as a hobby, and would like to now begin learning tricks, perhaps the best one to start with is referred to as an ollie due to the fact that mastering this trick will be necessary to learn other tricks such as the kickflip. If you take the time to master this trick you will find that other more difficult tricks will come much easier.

Let’s begin by outlining the steps necessary to learn an ollie. The first step is the stance that you place your feet on the board. You are going to want to place one foot on the tail end of the board and the other foot will then be planted in the middle of the skateboard. Second, you are going to place the ball area of your foot that is by the tail of the board in the middle of the board itself, so that when you do push downward that ball area will feel the tension. Your third move should be to place your foot in the middle of the board almost straight across the entire board. You will need to practice the pushing down motion quickly as well as maneuvering all of your weight onto the tail area as this is the initial motion behind the trick itself. To learn the other two steps, it may be beneficial to check out a video of the steps so that you can master it correctly.

When learning new tricks, I think a simple rule of thumb is that if you’re not going down, you are not trying hard enough. Simply put, wiping out is as much a part of skating as Swiss bearings. When trying to master a new move, you’re going to fall, even the pros bail when their trying something new. The real trick is getting up and getting back on the board, no matter how hard you bail and try again. The odds are that , unless there is a city bus coming, that bail is not going to be your demise. Being a skater is not for the weak or gutless. Unlike most other sports, bleeding is pretty much a requirement when it comes to skating. I know it can be very intimidating when you roll up on 12 steps with a handrail, but if you don’t try it, you will never know how good you will be at it and it is very likely that on your first few attempts you are going to slam, but you have to have the heart to try. No matter how scared you get, you just have to strap that chin strap extra tight, click that tail and throw down the sickest, fattest 50-50 grind imaginable and you probably will slam on the first few attempts. Give blood ………………… Skateboard.
